The ATLANTIC KINGFISHER, MAERSK CHANCELLOR, MAERSK CHALLENGER, MAERSK CHIGNECTO and MAERSK GABARUS are secured while the oil rigs they serve are in refit. The Henry Goodrich is in Pascagoula, MS at signal Internationl Shipyard and the GSF Grand Banks is undergoing refit in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Russian Ship Luybov Orlova sold

CBC News today reported that the Luybov Orlova which has been in St. john's for approx a year and a half has been sold to a Norwegian company and the new owner wants the ship in europe as quickly as possible.

From reports on the CBC no one will be sorry to see it gone, as the ship has no heat, no generators operating, only the port authority checking on the ship. The ship could be gone by the end of Feb, depending on how quickly the deal closes

The ship has accrued more then $200,000 in berthing fees since it was arrested, and the CBC Newfoundland reported the vessel has been sold for $275,000.

Apollo heading for refit

The ferry APOLLO will head to refit after todays departures according to Labrador Marine's website.

The Apollo is expected to be in refit for 2 months and her replacement will be the SIR ROBERT BOND. The Bond will however operate from Corner Brook instead of St. Barbe, because the Bond is to large to safely navigate the smaller port of St. Barbe. Tuvaq in St. John's for the winter?

The Tuvaq as shown secured in St. John's Dec 24, 2011. The ship spent last winter in Lewisporte, Newfoundland, but I am thinking that there maynot be enough room in Lewisporte now.
The Woodward Group recently bought two new tankers the Alsterstern, and Havelstern, and they are in Lewisporte along with the Nanny and Mokami. The Dorsch is at the dockyard dock having work done.

Labrador Freight Service Wrapping Up

The ferry service to Labrador is finishing up, the Sir Robert Bond is currently in Lewisporte after a trip to Nataushish, Nain and Goose Bay. The Northern Ranger will arrive Lewisporte today from Labrador. The Astron is currently stormbound in Cartwright, but when underway will make the trip to Lewisporte and she will be finished.

Sir Robert Bond to head to Labrador

The Labrador ferry the Sir Robert Bond departed St. John's around 1900hrs Nov 26, 2011 after a long refit and headed to Lewisporte, Newfoundland. The Bond should arrive in Lewisporte this evening Nov 27, 2011 where loading will start right away to get a back log of freight shipped to Labrador before the winter freeze.

The Bond will assist the Astron and Northern Ranger.

Vega Desgagnes Visits

Desgagnes tankers usually visits St. John's bring in I do believe Mud oil to be used in the offshore.

There were lots of supply vessels in port Nov 20, 2011. In the following photos is the Maersk Challenger seems to be waiting for its next assignment. The Burin Sea is tied up alongside, it serves the Terra Nova Field. Also the Atlantic Osprey was anchored in the harbor, the reason being the Salarium was in unloading salt, so there was no room at the base. Other supply shipa in were the Maersk Norseman, Atlantic Hawk, Maersk Chignecto.

The tanker Nanny visited St. John's Nov 1, 2011. Owned and operated by the Woodward Group, the Nanny spends most of her time in the Arctic bringing fuel and oil to Arctic communities. The ship built in 1993, is 117 meter's long and has a gross tonnage of 6,544.

VSL Centurion in port

In St. John's for the last two and a half weeks is the cargo ship VSL Centurion registerd in Panama. The ship built in 1987 is 186 meter's long and has a gross tonnage of 17,599.
I'm not sure what she was doing in port, but it there seems to be some work being done on the ship. She is pretty large with her bow lines strung across the dock I had to drive under them to get a photo.

Astron to be chartered...Again

The Newfoundland government has once again chartered the Astron to help clear a backlog of freight in Lewisporte, Newfoundland that has to be shipped to the North coast of Labrador.

The CBC New reported that the Dutch Runner will not be back next year, due to the fact the ship is not suitable for the service. One problem is the Runner is slow and cannot ship the freigt fast enough to local communities.

Government is going to look for a replacement with the help of CAI Nunatsiavut Marine, but if one can't be found they will go to tender to find a suitable ship that has to have roll on / roll off. The government was hoping to have the Sir Robert bond back but the ship is still in St. John's undergoing inspections.

The cruise ship Clipper Adventurer was in St. John's Oct 10, 2011. The ship is the sister ship to the Luybov Orlova which has been under arrest in St. John's since Sept 2010.

In Aug 2010, the Clipper Adventurer ran into a charted rock in the waters of Nunavuts Coronation Gulf. The Resolve Marine Group a Florida based salvage company was awarded the contract and towed the Ship to Cambridge Bay

Sanco Spirit

The former Gibraltar registered seismic vessel Sanco Spirit departs St. John's Aug 3, 2011 for a survey area off Labrador.
The ship first arrived in St. John's July 18, 2011 and according to a report in the local newspaper the Telegram the owners applied for a coasting license to operate in Canadian Waters, but first it has to be proven that no Canadian ship is available to do the job.
The application was objected by Geophysical Services which has a Canadian vessel GSI Admiral available to do the work, but it seem they went ahead and reflaged the Sanco Spirit because the ship is now registered in St. John's

Former CCGS Wilfred Templeman put up for auction

The former Canadian Coast Guard Reserach vessel Wilfred Templeman has been renamed 2011-01 and put up for auction. The minimum bid is $400,000, and the closing date is Aug 28, 2011

The ship built in 1981 at Pictou, Nova Scotia is 165 feet long. The Templeman has been involed in many missions over the years bu one that stick in my mind is the 1995 Turbot War, when the Wilfred Templeman white at the time escorted the Spainish vessel Estao to St. John's along with other Coast Guard and Fisheries vessels.

Arriving in Lewisporte, Newfoundland July 23, 2011 from Goteborg, Sweden was the Alsterstern.

The ship built in 1994 measures 161 meters, has a gross tonnage of 11,426, previously owned by Rigel Schiffanfts of Germany. Not sure where the ship will operate, but I would say she will be brought over to Canadian flag very soon, registered in St. John's, Newfoundland as of July 26, 2011..thanks Mac for letting me know.

This may be the first visit for the Esta Desgagnes into St. John's. The vessel arrived the evening of July 20, 2011 and is at the dock unloading mud oil for offshore drilling.

The Esta Desgagnes built in 1992 is the former Emerald Star and was aquired by Desgagnes a couple of years ago.

Tug and Barge

The semi-submersible barge Giant 4 with tug Union Wrestler arrived in St. John's July 8, 2011.
According to a news report from the local telegram the barge will head to Motier Bay to pick up a huge slab off steel sitting in 80 meters of water since 2005, that is when the Searose production vessel left Marystown for the oil fields off Newfoundland. The production ship left behind a piece of steel 23 meter's in diameter used to cover the moonpool, which is the opening where the ship is connected to oil well equipment on the seabed.

The semi-submersible barge Giant 4 will spent 10 days later this month retrieving the plate.

A further note regarding this barge, it was used in 2000 to help raise the Russian submarine Kursk a year after it exploded and sank in the Barents Sea killing all 118 crewman

Refit for the Bond

The Labrador ferry Sir Robert Bond shown tied up in St. John's at the Newdock shipyard July 13, 2011 undergoing refit.

With no passenger service out of Lewisporte anymore the Bond has spent her time in St. John's since March 29, 2011 undergoing refit and upgrades including painting, repairs to thrusters and installing a new control system. The Bond built in 1975 is old but she is still a fine looking ship and has served Newfoundland and Labrador well from when she was owned by Marine Atlantic and now by the Newfoundland government.

Dutch Runner in Lewisporte

The Dutch Runner arrived in Lewisporte June 9, 2011 to start loading for ports along the coast of Labrador.

Built in 1988 and at a length of 84 meter's, the ship to be very suitable for Labrador, with loading at the stern the vessel also has two large cranes.

The Thebeland shown in this photo secured at pier 17 in St. John's getting some painting done after her Oceanex charter finished (Date of Photo April 30, 2011) The Thebeland took the place of the Oceanex Sanderling atarting Jan 30, 2011 after the Sanderling departed for Gibraltar for refit, operating from Halifax to St. John's, then the ship took the place of the Cabot after the ship departed for Las Palmas, Spain.

The Thebeland departed later that afternoon April 30 for Geona, Italy

White Fleet Reurns to St. John's

The Santa Maria Manuela, one of two remaining tall ships from the famed Portuguese White Fleet arrived in St. John's on May 19, 2011. The White Fleet was a fixture along the waterfront until the 1970's. The ship owned by a Portuguese family rebuilt the ship to its original form at a cost of around $12 million.

Avataq in Lewisporte

The AVATAQ arrived in Lewisporte June 3, 2011. The AVATAQ built in 1989 and owned by Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping INC was in Lewisporte to drop off containers and other equipment for CAI Marine, the company that is operating the Northern Ranger, Sir Robert Bond as well as the shore base operations for the Labrador Coastal service

Labrador Coastal Ferry Service set to get underway

The Labrador Coastal ferry set to get underway. The Northern Ranger is due to depart Lewisporte June 1, 2011 for Goose Bay, the ship will depart Goose Bay June 3, 2011 for Black Tickle, Cartwright and Rigolet.

The freight vessel the Dutch Runner will begin service when ice conditions permit.

The terminal in Lewisporte began accepting freight May 30, 2011. The ferry Sir Robert bond will only be used when needed as there will be no passenger service from Lewisporte, the Bond is currently in St. John's for refit.

Maersk Dispatcher and Maersk Detector returns to St. John's

Two familiar supply vessels have returned to St. John's, the Maersk Dispatcher and Maersk Detector, the Dispatcher returning on May 26 and the Detector returning May 27. The Maersk Dispatcher is currently making her second trip to the Whiterose field located 350 KM off the Coast of Newfoundland. The Maersk Detector has not left since her arrival.

These are beautiful ships, the Dispatcher built in 2005, and the Detector built in 2006. Both have gross tonage of 5,470, 89.3 meter's, horsepower of 18,280 and a bollard pull of 219 tons.

Busy Winter Port

The port of Lewisporte, Newfoundland is pretty busy these days with the ferry Sir Robert Bond and coastal ferry Northern Ranger, the tankers Nanny, Dorsch, Tuvaq and Mokami spending the winter.

Lewisporte was always busy when the ferry service was operated by Marine Atlantic, with chartered coastal freighters, like the Marine Transport, Kloster, Terra Nova, Topsail, and Duke of Topsailand Astron. Then there were the ships owned by Marine Atlantic, like the Taverner, Hopedale, Petite Forte, Marine Packer, Sir Robert Bond, Ambrose Shea, Atlantic Freighter and Northern Ranger..and there were lots of other ships prior to that like the Kyle, Nonia....before my time.

Over the last number of years there are not as many ships operating due to the fact a road is being built, and the handover of the service from Marine Atlantic to the Newfoundland Government in 1998.

In 2011 brings a new ship to this service, the Dutch Runner, with a stern ramp and two cranes, this ship should work well, but only time will tell.

Woodward's Tankers

The Woodward Group's tanker Tuvaq, Nanny and Dorsch shown in Lewisporte, Newfoundland their new winter home. The Woodward Group purchased the Oil wharf and shore operation from Imperial Oil a little over a year ago.

Maersk Norsman shifts berths

The Maersk Norseman built in 1996 at Marystown, Newfoundland has been a common site from time to time on the waterfront as she serves the Hibernia platform 196 miles east southeast of St. John's, along with her sister ship Maersk Nascopie and the Maersk Placentia.

Thebeland

The container ship Thebeland shown secured in St. John's April 21, 2011. The ship has been on charter to Oceanex while the Oceanex Sanderling underwent a refit, in which according to a newspaper advertisement Oceanex invested a great deal in the Sanderling, and as of April 31, 2011 the Sanderling will make two round trips from Halifax to St. John's.

The Thebeland right now is filling in for the Cabot, which is on refit.

Salt arriving early

The Salarium as shown arriving St. John's April 22, 2011 with a load of salt. Built in 1979 by Collingwood Shipyards as Nanticoke has been strengthened for ocean service. The ship has taken over service last year from the Sauniere.

However you want to look at it, this is a late or early arrival of salt that I have seen.

Atlantic Viking

Apollo Replacement

The Apollo is back in St. John's arriving April 17, 2011. The ship arrived to be dry-docked, according to local news reports rope became entangled around its propellers causing damage. The ship is operating on one engine, and there is also an issue with one of its shafts, so the ship arrived to see what was needed to be replaced so it can be ordered and will return to her run, and once the parts arrives will head to dr-dock again.
While the Apollo is in St. John's, the Astron is operating on that run, carrying cars and freight and up to 12 passengers, but most of the passengers are being flown across. This ferry run has had its problems so far, becuase of ice and now the ferry. I'm sure things will be ironed out soon.

Western Tugger

The Western Tugger arrived in St. John's mid to late March. Owned by Midnight Marine she is the former Doug McKiel built in 1943, and gross tons of 389. As of April 6, 2011 she is on dry-dock in St. John's.

Santa Cristina arrives

The Portuguese fishing Santa Cristina arrived in St. John's April 6, 2011. The ship must arrived for repairs and fuel.
